Chapter 3 Vocabulary Flashcards
Dermatological Reactions
Skin reactions from adverse medication
Drug allergy
When the body forms an antibody response to a medication that causes an immune reaction
Hypersensitivity
Excessive response to primary or secondary effects of a drug
Poisoning
Drug overdose
Stomatitis
inflammation of mucosal membranes, related to drug effects
Super infections
destruction or normal flora, and inivasive bacteria grow out of control and results in infection
Adverse effect
unpleasant drug effects that may be unpleasant or dangerous
List 4 reasons why a medication would have adverse effects
The drug has other effects on other systems in the body
The patient may be sensitive to the drug given
Drug reaction in the body may cause other undesirable effects
the patient may be taking too much or too little of the drug
Primary Actions
Extension from the desired effect, usually like a drug overdose
Secondary actions
When there are side effects from the drug that can be unavoidable, such as drowsiness from antihistimines
Anaphylactic reaction
When an antibody reacts with specific sites within the body that causes a release of chemicals that cause inflammation of mucosal membranes, leading to respiratory distress
anaphylactic assessment
Hives Rash Difficulty breathing increased BP Dilated Pupils Panic feeling Respiratory arrest
Intervention for an anaphylactic reaction
epinephrine 0.3 ml of 1:1,000 solution
Cytotoxic reaction
Antibodies circulate in the bloodstream and attack the antigens (drug) and cause cell death, may not be seen right away
Cytotoxic Reaction assessment
Blood work shows decreased
hematocrit, white blood cells, and platelet
Liver function test shows elevated liver enzyme and decreased kidney function
