Chapter 3 Tissues Flashcards
What are the 4 tissue types?
Epithelial
Connective
Muscle
Nervous
What are tissues?
Group of cells of similar functions and types that cooperate to support the life of a complex organism as a whole.
What is epithelial tissue?
Cover external surface and line internal surfaces. (Blood vessel)
What is a basement membrane?
Connects epithelial tissue to connective tissue. Supplies oxygen and nutrients and carries away waste.
What is a brush border?
Microvilli in the intestines, increases surface area.
What is simple squamous?
Thin and delicate, allows passage. Can only be in well protected areas. Reduces friction.
What is simple cuboidal?
Also delicate. Found in areas of secretion and absorption. (Thyroid, liver, salivary glands.)
What is simple columnar?
Lines GI tract. Absorption and secretion. form dense microvilli. Contain goblet cells.
What is stratified squamous?
Areas of mechanical and chemical stress.(mouth, esophagus, vagina, rectum) outer layer is worn off and replaced by Lower layers.
Epithelial tissue functions.
Protects Absorbs Filters Sensory Secretes Excretes
What’s is and exocrine gland?
Secrets product to immediate are by ducts.
What is and endocrine gland?
Secretes hormones to entire body by bloodstream.
What is connective tissue?
Connects things. Ex:) blood, tendons, cartilage, and bone.
What are the functions of connective tissue?
Protects organs(surrounds them) fat Shock absorption(joint surfaces) Insulates the body(fat/lipids) Energy reserve Frame to support the body(skeletal)
What are the 4 types of membranes?
Mucous
Serous
Cutaneous
Synovial
What is a mucous membrane?
Line and protect organs that have connection to outside environment (respiratory, digestive, urinary, reproduction)
What are serous membranes?
Line closed body cavities and the organs within.
What does transudate mean?
Thin and watery, creates moist and slippery surface.
What is a cutaneous membrane?
(Integument) produces keratin that makes skin waterproof and prevents drying.
What is a synovial membrane?
Produces synovial fluid which reduces friction and abrasion at the ends of bones.
Skeletal muscle (voluntary or involuntary)
Voluntary
Smooth muscle (voluntary or involuntary)
Involuntary
Cardiac muscle. (Voluntary of involuntary)
Involuntary
What is nervous tissue?
Carries information throughout the body. (Touch, heat, pressure)
What does somatic mean?
Under conscious control (movement of body)
What does autonomic mean?
Unconscious control (digestion,heart rate)
What is muscle tissue?
Allows/causes movement
