Chapter 3 Test Flashcards
Photosynthesis
Process by which a cell captures energy in sunlight and uses it to make food
Autotroph
Organism that makes its own food
Heterotroph
Organism that cannot make their own food
What happens during photosynthesis
Organisms absorb energy from the sum and use the energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen
What is the first stage of photosynthesis
Capturing the suns energy
What happens in stage 1
Energy from sun is captured
Where is the sun captured in stage 1
In the chloroplasts in the leaves
What does the chlorophyll do
It captures the suns energy and converts it to a form used in stage 2
What happens to water in stage 1
Water absorbed through the roots splits into hydrogen and oxygen and oxygen is given off as a waste product through the stomata
What happens in the second stage
Cells use hydrogen(from water), carbon dioxide(enters through stomata), and energy to make sugars
Photosynthesis equation
(Presence of)Light energy+(6 co2)carbon dioxide+(6 h2o)water yields (c6h12o6)glucose+oxygen(6 o2)
Why is light energy on the left side of the equation
To show it is used in the reaction
What happens to the sugars produced
Plant cells use some for food, carrying out plants functions,(compounds) for cell wall, and some is stored
Cellular respiration
Process by which cells obtain energy from glucose
What happens during cellular respiration
Cells breakdown glucose and other molecules from food in the presence of oxygen, releasing energy
