Chapter 3 Test Flashcards
During what does a cell nucleus divides into two new nuclei?
Mitosis
During which phase of the cell cycle does DNA replication occur?
Interphase
Why are plants green?
Plants are green because of chlorophyll the main photosynthetic pigment in chloroplasts.
Which process releases energy in cells without using oxygen?
Fermentation
Briefly describe the cell cycle?
The first step is interface where the Silkrose and creates a copy of the DNA. The next step is mitosis when a cells nucleus divides into two new nuclei and one set of DNA is distributed into each daughter cell. And the third step is cytokinesis whereThe final process of cell division is completed. At the end of cytokinesis, each cell enters interface, and the cell cycle begins again.
What are the three phases of mitosis?
The three phases of mitosis are prophase, metaphase, and anaphase.
Define prophase
Prophase is the first phase of mitosis where chromosomes in the nucleus condense. The parents of centrioles move to opposite sides of the nucleus. Spindle fibers form a bridge between the ends of the cell. The nuclear envelope breaks down.
Define metaphase
Metaphase is the middle or second phase of mitosis. Each chromosome attaches to a spindle fiber at its centromere.
Define photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is the process by which a cell captures energy in sunlight and uses it to make food
What happens during photosynthesis?
During photosynthesis, plants and some other organisms absorbs energy from the sun and use the energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into sugars and oxygen.
What are The two stages in photosynthesis?
First plants capture the suns energy. Second, plants produce sugars.
What role does chlorophyll play in photosynthesis?
Chlorophyll captures light energy and converts it to a form that is used in the second stage of photosynthesis.
What is the photosynthesis equation?
Light energy + carbon dioxide + water —— glucose + oxygen
Define cellular respiration.
Cellular respiration is the process by which cells obtain energy from glucose. during cellular respiration, cells breakdown glucose and other molecules from food in the presence of oxygen, releasing energy.
