Name some differences between Matthew and Luke’s infancy narratives and tell why they used the examples they did
Matthew’s infancy included a genealogy, with the annunciation to Joseph. There is an angle that appears and has a message regarding the birth of Jesus. It goes on talking about the visit of the Magi. They used this example because it displays what happened before Jesus and the build up to what Jesus is and became to be. While Luke’s infancy explains the purpose of the Gospel. As well as Mary’s visit to Elizabeth and the Magnificat that is Mary’s song of praise. Also talks about the birth of John the Baptist and Jesus, as well as the circumcision of John. They used these examples because it displays the purpose for Luke’s infancy and the significance of right before Jesus with Mary.
Jesus’ baptism - why, when, where, who, etc.
Why- The purpose of John’s baptism is for forgiveness of sins. Jesus allowed John to baptize him because he wanted to show his submission to the Father’s will, which then foreshadowed the Baptism of his Death for the remission of our sins. Serving as a model for our own Baptisms.
Where- He was baptized in the Jordan River
Who- John the Baptist
Why did Jesus use parables? What did they reveal/mean? Give an example.
It was easier to remember, To force hearers to look at reality in a fresh way. So he can reveal truths to only those willing to listen. The parables teach us about the Kingdom of god. They are mysteries of God’s Reign, providing a glimpse of the marvelous works of God in this world.
Name at least two temptations in the desert. How did Jesus resist?
- giving Jesus the whole world
- putting god to the test
- turning stones into bread
- Jesus resisted tempation by reading scriptures and having faith in God
