Mehl Study: performance assessment

A

Study asking participants to rate how accurate they think people are at assessing how much they themselves perform 25 different behaviours, also asked how accurate they think people are at predicting how often other people they know well perform these behaviours
-rated accuracy if self-predictions to be greater than accuracy if predictions of others
-reports of close friends are as accurate as our own in anticipating our actual behaviour
Both self and other have accurate insight into who one is
Some aspects of a person are uniquely known to self and certain aspects uniquely known to others

Cohen and Gunz study: Storytelling

A

Asked Canadian and Asian students to tell stories about 10 different situations in which they were the Center of attention
-Canadians: more likely than asians to reproduce the scene from their original point of view, looking outward from their own perspective
-Asians - more likely to imagine the scene as an observer might, describing it from 3rd person perspective
-westerners tend to experience and recall events from inside out - themselves at Center looking out at world
-Easterners - more likely to experience and recall evens from outside in - starting from social world looking back at selves as an object of attention

-were offered to take 1 of 2 meds - a performance enhancing or performance inhibiting drug
-those who felt likely to fail test preferred performance inhibiting drug even though it was likely to diminish their chances of succeeding - people would rather fail and have a ready excuse for it than go for success and have no excuse for failure
