Chapter 3: Stress, Illness and, Coping Flashcards
Alarm Reaction
The first stage in the general adaptation syndrome when the body’s resources are mobilized.
Allostatic Load
The cumulative physiological effect of chronic stress.
Catecholamines
A class of hormones, including epinephrine and norepinephrine, secreted by the adrenal glands.
Cognitive Appraisal
The mental process people use in assessing whether a demand is threatening and what resources are available to meet the demand.
Cortico Steroids
A class of hormones, including cortisol, secreted by the adrenal glands.
Daily Hassels
Everyday annoyances or unpleasant events.
General Adaptation Syndrome
The sequence of physiological reactions to prolonged and intense stress. The sequence consists of the alarm reaction, the stage of resistance, and the stage of exhaustion.
Intergenerational Trauma
Trauma that is experienced by an individual or group as a result of historical trauma experienced by parents, grandparents, and/or earlier generations.
Life Events
Major occurrences in people’s lives that require some degree of psychological adjustment.
Polygraph
An electromechanical device that assesses the body’s arousal by measuring and recording several physiological indexes, such as blood pressure and respiration rate, simultaneously.
Primary Appraisal
The cognitive process people use in assessing the meaning of an event or situation for their well‐being.
Reactivity
The physiological component of the response to stress.
Secondary Appraisal
The cognitive process people use in assessing the resources they have to meet demands.
Stage of Exhaustion
The third stage in the general adaptation syndrome, when the body’s energy reserves are severely depleted.
Stage of Resistance
The second stage in the general adaptation syndrome, when the body tries to adapt to the stressor.
