Chapter 3 - 'Roles Of The Cerebral Cortex' Flashcards
Give a few examples of what the cerebral cortex does?
Complex mental abilities.
Processes incoming sensory information.
Plan and control of voluntary bodily movements.
What is hemispheric specialisation?
The idea that one hemisphere has specialised functions or exerts greater control over a particular function.
What does the left hemisphere specialise in?
Verbal and analytical functions.
What does the right hemisphere specialise in?
Non verbal functions.
E.g
Creativity
Appreciating music and artwork
Recognising faces, patterns and tunes
What are cortical lobes?
How many lobes are there?
Areas of the cerebral cortex associated with different functions.
Four different lobes.
Name the different cortical lobes.
Frontal lobe, parietal lobe, occipital lobe and temporal lobe.
Where is Broca’s area?
What does Broca’s area control? More over..
Located in the frontal lobe on the left hemisphere.
Crucial role in the production of speech and writing, that is clear and fluent.
Where is Wernickes area? What is it connected to?
What does it do? More over..?
It is in the temporal lobe on the left hemisphere. It is connected to Broca’s area through a bundle of nerves.
It is involved in speech production but has a crucial role in comprehension of speech. More specifically interpreting sounds of human speech.
Difference between Wernicke and Broca’s area?
Wernicke’s area comprehends speech and writing whilst Broca’s area articulates speech and writing.
