Does mild croup always need to be treated?
No
Although it is largely self-limiting, what can be used to treat mild croup?
Single dose of corticosteroid - e.g. dexamethasone
What does more severe croup call for?
Hospital admission
In severe croup, what should be given before transfer to hospital?
Single dose of corticosteroid - e.g. dexamethasone
What is given in hospital for severe croup? (2)
- Dexamethasone - oral or IV
2. Inhaler budesonide
In hospital, how long after the first dose of corticosteroid might it need to be repeated if necessary?
12 hours
For severe croup not controlled with corticosteroids, what can be administered?
Nebulised adrenaline
How long do the effects of the adrenaline last?
2-3hours, close monitoring for recurrence of obstruction required
