Chapter 3 pgs. 87-101***exam Flashcards
What are the terms that describe the primary types of tissues
Epithelium (covering); connective (support); muscle (movement); nervous (control)
The lining covering and glandular tissue of the body. Functions: protection, absorption, filtration, and secretion. (Ex: skin)
Epithelial tissue or epithelium
One layer of cells. Main functions= absorption secretion and filtration
Simple epithelia
More than one cell layer. Main function is protection
Stratified epithelial
Makes up walls of lungs. Cells are compact together. 1 layer
Simple squamous
Makes up kidney tubules. cubed cells formed around the lumens. 1 layer.
Simple cuboidal
Make up small intestine. Columns. 1 layer
Simple columner
Lining of trachea. Contains cilia. Extended columns.
Pseudo-stratified columnar
Lining of esophagus. Multiple layers. Thick base layer with squished cell layers above it.
Stratified squamous
Multiple layers. No set cell shapes. Bladder. Contracts and relaxes also forms other urinary organs
Transitional
Connects body parts. Found everywhere in body. Primarily protect, support, and bind together other body tissues
Connective tissue
Osseous tissue. Composed of osteocytes sitting in cavities called lacunae. Protects and supports body organs.
Bone
Most common. Abundant collagen fibers; rubbery matrix; entire fetal skeleton is made up of this
Hyaline Cartilage
Forms cushion like disks between the vertebrae of the spinal column
Fibrocartilage
Found in structure with elasticity. Supports external ear.
Elastic cartilage
Collagen fibers are the main matrix element. Crowded between the collagen fibers are rows of fibroblasts that manufacture the building blocks of the fibers. Forms tendons and ligaments
Dense connective tissue. Or dense fibrous tissue
Softer and have more cells and fewer fibers than any other connective tissue type except blood
Loose connective tissue
where in the body can you find adipose tissue?
fat
what are three types of muscle tissue? voluntary or involuntary? Striated or not striated? uni-nucleated or multi-nucleated? where are they found?
SKELETAL MUSCLE-voluntary, striated, multi-nucleated, attached to bones and skin
CARDIAC MUSCLE- involuntary, striated, uni-nucleated, heart
SMOOTH MUSCLE- involuntary, not striated, uni-nucleated, walls of hollow organs(stomach, uterus, and blood vessels)
where is nervous tissue found?
all over the body
