Chapter 3 - Major Muscles that Act at the Ankle and Foot Flashcards
Anterior Tibialis -
1 - What is the primary function?
2 - Selected Exercises that target the muscle
1 - Dorsiflexion at the ankle, inversion with foot
2 - Cycling with toe clips, resisted inversion with dorislexion
Peroneus longus
1 - What is the primary function?
2 - Selected Exercises that target the muscle?
1 - Plantar flexion at ankle, eversion at foot
2 - Resisted eversion of foot
Peroneus Brevis
1 - What is the primary function?
2 - Selected Exercises that target the muscle?
1 - Plantar flexion at ankle, eversion at foot
2 -Resisted Eversion of foot
Gastrocnemius
1 - What is the primary function?
2 - Selected Exercises that target the muscle?
1 - plantar flexion at ankle, flexion at knee
2 - Hill Running, jumping rope, calf raises, cycling, stair climbing
Soleus
1 - What is the primary function?
2 - Selected Exercises that target the muscle?
1 - Plantar flexion at ankle
2 - Virtually the same as for gastrocnemius, bent knee toe raises with resistance
Posterior Tibialis
1 - What is the primary function?
2 - Selected Exercises that target the muscle?
1 - Plantar flexion at ankle, inversion at foot
2 - Resisted inversion of foot with plantar flexion
Extensor Hallucis Longus
1 - What is the primary function?
2 - Selected Exercises that target the muscle?
1 - Dorisflextion and inversion of the foot, extension of the great toe
2 - Resisted inversion with dorsiflexion
Estensor Digitorum Longus
1 - What is the primary function?
2 - Selected Exercises that target the muscle?
1 - Dorisiflexion and eversion of foot, extension of toes 2 through 5
2 - Resisted eversion with dorsiflexion
Peroneus Tertius
1 - What is the primary function?
2 - Selected Exercises that target the muscle?
1 - Dorisflection and eversion of the foot
2 - Resisted Eversion with Dorsiflextion
Plantaris
1 - What is the primary function?
2 - Selected Exercises that target the muscle?
1 - Flexion of the knee, plantar flexion of the ankle
2 - Same as gastrocnemius (hill running, jumping rope, calf raises, cycling, stair climbing)
Flexor Hallucis Longus
1 - What is the primary function?
2 - Selected Exercises that target the muscle?
1 - Flexion of the great toe, plantar flexion of the ankle, inversion of the foot
2 - Resisted inversions with plantar flexion
Flexor Digitorum Longus
1 - What is the primary function?
2 - Selected Exercises that target the muscle?
1 - Flexion of toes 2 though 5, plantar flexion of the ankle, inversion of the foot
2 - Resisted inversion with plantar flexion
What is dorisiflexion?
The action of raising the foot upwards towards the shin
What is Foot Inversion vs. Foot Eversion?
Foot Inversion - tilting of the sole towards the middle of the foot
Foot Eversion - tilting of the sole towards the outside of the foot.
What is plantar flexion?
plantar flexion refers to the movement of the foot in a downward motion away from the body.
List (2) conditions that can make plantar flexion difficult?
Conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis can reduce plantar flexion and make walking more difficult.
What is eversion of foot?
Eversion is the tilting of the sole of your foot outwards, away from the midline of the body during movement.
What is inversion of foot?
Inversion is the tilting of your sole towards the middle of your foot.
