Chapter 3 (cont.) - Structures of the Brain Flashcards
Brain stem
adjoins spinal cord, regulates CNS, regulates cardiac & respiratory system
Cerebellum (little brain)
receives messages from muscles, tendons, etc., and ear to control balance, movement. (muscle memory/how to perform tasks)
Limbic system includes
hypothalamus, hippocampus, amygdala
Amygdala shaped like
almond
Amygdala
emotional center of brain, fight or flight
Amygdala connects to
hippocampus
Hippocampus shaped like
seahorse
Hippocampus
involved in memory formation, gateway before memories are permanent
Hypothalamus
responsible for hormone production, controls autonomic processes (e.g. biological rhythms)
Cerebral cortex
outer layer of brain; controls thoughts/imagination/language
Cerebral cortex has two hemispheres
left & right; (L)eft (L)ogical, (R)ight c(R)eativity
Four lobes
1.) frontal lobe
2.) parietal lobe
3.) temporal lobe
4.) occipital lobe
frontal lobe
reasoning, motor control, emotion, language
parietal lobe
receives info. from TOUCH sense
temporal lobe
receives info from AUDITORY sense
