Benevolent Lie
Lies that are not malicious or hostile, May be helpful to person to whom they are told
Cognitive Conservation
Seek information or relationships that conforms to an existing self concept or perception of one self. You look for things that confirm the way you feel about yourself.
Equivocal Language
A diplomatic way of saying a true message or false message to a person without offending them. On the other hand a clear message may offend when saying the truth and straight up lie when not. Painting on pg 99
Perceived Self
The person you believe yourself to be in moments of real honest self examination. Things you may not tell others and may or may not be accurate. How you personally look at yourself; your private self.
Presenting self
opposite of perceived self most of the time. This is your public image. The way we want to appear to others. Most of the time, our presenting self seeks to be a socially approved image. Loving partner, diligent student, conscious worker, loyal friend, great parent, etc.
Face
The term sociologists Erving Goffman used to describe that socially approved identity. The image the individual wants to project tot he world
Face-Work
The verbal and non verbal ways in which we act to maintain our own representing image and the images of others. Verbal and non verbal ways we go about in projecting the image we want the world to view us as.
Identity Management
The verbal non verbal communication strategies people use to influence how other view them.
Johari WIndow
A model on self disclosure in which one side represents information that both you and the other person know. This is known as the open area.
The other side is known as the blind side which is info you are unaware of but the other side knows (Feedback gives hints)
Hidden- Info you are not willing to reveal
Unknown- Info not yet discovered by you or the other party
Talent yet to be discovered.
Lie
A deliberate attempt to hide or misinterpret the truth
Privacy Image
Choices people make to reveal or conceal info about themselves
Reference Group
People we use to evaluate our own characteristics
Reflected Appraisal
A mirroring View of the judgments of those around him or her. If you recover positive messages you feel good about yourself and the contrary with negative messages.
Self Concept
The deepest traits in which you describe yourself
Self Disclosure
Revealing personal information about yourself
