Chapter 3- Central Tendency Flashcards
Define:
Mean
The sum of the scores divided by the number of scores
Define
Central Tendency
A statistical measure to determine a single score that defines the center of a distribution
Define:
Median
The score that divides a distribution in half so that 50% of the individuals in the distribution have scores at or below the median
Define:
Mode
The score or category that had the greatest frequency
Describe mean and median in a symmetrical distribution.
Mean and median are the same value
If exactly one mode it has the same value
Define:
Kurtosis
When the distribution is really wide or narrow
Define:
Platykurtic
When you have a narrow distribution
Define:
Mesokurtic
When you have a wide distribution
Describe mean in a skewed distribution.
Influenced by an extreme scores is found far toward the long tail (positive or negative)
Describe median in a skewed distribution.
The median is found toward the long tail but not as far as the mean
Describe the mode in a skewed distribution.
Mode is found near the short tail
Is it positive or negative?
Mean-Median>0
Positively skewed
Is it positive or negative?
Mean-Median<0
Negatively skewed
