Chapter 3 - Biology and Behavior Flashcards
What makes up the central nervous system?
The brain and spinal cord.
What are the two parts of the nervous system?
Central and Peripheral
What does the peripheral nervous system do?
Transmits info to and from the central nervous system.
What are the two parts of the peripheral nervous system?
Autonomic and Somatic
What does the autonomic nervous system do?
Automatically regulate glands, internal organs and blood vessels, pupil dilation, digestion and blood pressure.
What does the somatic nervous system do?
Carries sensory info and controls movement of the skeletal muscles.
What are the two parts of the autonomic nervous system?
Parasympathetic and sympathetic divisions.
What is the spinal cord reflex?
The simplest neural circuit involving a sensory neuron, an interneuron and a motor neuron.
What is a neuron?
The main signaling unit of the nervous system.
What are the different parts of neurons?
1) Dendrites
2) Axons
3) Terminal branches of the axons
4) Myelin sheath
5) Neural impulse
6) Cell body
What do dendrites do?
Receive messages from other cells.
What are the axons?
Passes messages away from the cell body to other neurons, muscles or glands.
What do the terminal branches of the axons do?
Create connections with other neurons.
What does the neural impulse do?
It is the electrical impulse traveling through the axon.
What is the myelin sheath?
Covers the axon of some neurons and speeds impulses.
What do neurotransmitters do?
They excite or inhibit nearby neurons.
