Chapter 3 Flashcards
Basics of chapter 3
Four types of biological macromolecules
Proteins, carbohydrates, nucleic acids, lipids
Proteins
Most complex out of all macromolecules. Have different functions. Heteropolymeres of alpha-amino acids.
Catalytic
Transport
Structure
Motion
Amino acids most suitable to carry out a variety of biological functions because:
Capacity to polymerize
Can be an acid or a bad
Varied physical properties (20 basic AA)
Varied chemical functionality
Amino acids consist of
Alpha-carbon center, Carboxyl group (coo-), hydrogen (alpha-H) amino group (H3N+), R group. At physiological ph= 7.4. tetrahedral.
Amino group can be protonated (H3N+) or deprotonated (NH2)
Carboxyl group can be protonated (COOH) or deprotonated (COO-)
