Chapter 3 Flashcards
Kinetic Energy vs Potential Energy
Kinetic - Motion Energy measured as temperature
Potential- Stored Energy becomes kinetic energy
Heat Types
Sensible Heat - Heat we can sense
Latent Heat - Heat exchanged w/ a phase change of water
Heat Transmission
Radiation, Conduction, Convection
What is Temperature?
A measure of the average kinetic energy of modules
- How fast they vibrate
- Measure of sensible heat
What are the two temperature scales?
Fahrenheit and Celsius
Temperature Scales
Kelvin - International system of units
Starts at absolute zero
Scattering
The reflection of radiation in all directions
Refraction
The blending of radiation, altering it’s wavelength
Albedo
The measure of diffusive reflection of solar radiation out of the total solar radiation received by a body
Light surfaces - high aldebo
Dark surface - low aldebo
How does latitude impact temperature?
Equatorial regions receive the most
insolation year round
Between Tropic of Cancer (23.5°N) and
Tropic of Capricorn (23.5°S)
Altitude
Heights above the Earth’s surface
Elevation
Height of point on Earth’s surface
Maritime Effect
Land near large bodies of water lack extreme temperature cycles
Continental Effect
Land isolated from large bodies of water have extreme hot and cold temperature cycles
Average world temperatures
Warmer - toward equator
Colder - toward poles
