Long-term Memory
A
- the permanent repository of the lifetime of information we have accumulated
- let’s us recognize familiar people & objects, drive a car, brush our teeth, or type a letter
- important for LTM are MEANING & ORGANIZATION
- understanding LTM = teachers can help students ACCESS & USE their prior knowledge to create new knowledge
- 3 types: DECLARATIVE,PROCEDURAL, CONDITIONAL
– most learning involves INTERPLAY among all three

– knowing HOW to perform certain activities
ex: make coffee, brush our teeth, open a book

Conceptual Knowledge
A
– knowing WHEN and WHY to use declarative & procedural knowledge
ex: know basic principles of algebra and can be able to RELIABLY perform certain procedural operations (and be able to apply this concept in other situations, especially REAL-WORLD CONTEXTS
