Describe Christopher Columbus’s expedition in 1492
He found some gold, animals and plants, tainos which were Indians, claimed land, and also found a supposed route to Asia from the west.
What area did Columbus think you’d reached in 1492? How do we know he was wrong?
He thought he had reached Asia, but Balboa heard that there was an ocean to the west that he called the Pacific Ocean, and Magellan or at least his crew circumnavigated the earth and went all around the earth and found that Asia was farther back
How were the expeditions of Cartier and Hudson different from most of the earlier expeditions to the Americas?
They were they explored the north, claimed land for France, England, and Holland instead of Spain, and at least Hudson’s was sponsored by trading companies instead of kings and Queens
What were the main goals of early expeditions to the Americas?
To find riches gold, silk, spices, to gain frame, newland, and to spread religion
In 1494, which two countries divided the Americas into the lands that each could claim?
Spain and Portugal
Why would an explorer from one country agree to an expedition in search of new land etc for another country?
If their own country was not willing to pay for an expedition they might get paid by a company from a different country and also, sometimes they would go on expeditions just for adventure or to gain fame
What was the Northwest Passage and why did so many countries sponsor expedition searching for it?
A supposed route to Asia that did not actually exist and it was meant for trading page in a much shorter cheaper way than the current routes
What were the costs for going on an expedition?
costs of actual money for food, crew, ship, and supplies,
risking your life,
the possibility of failing and not finding anything
and being in debt.
What were the benefits for going on an expedition?
They could enjoy it, they could find new trade routes, spread religion, gain new land power and riches of gold, silk, spices, and furs, and also gain fame
