Language
A set of symbols, letters, or words that have rules and are used for communication.
Decode
Assigning meaning to other’s words to translate them into your thoughts. (To help you better understand.)
What are the rules of using language to communicate?
- Semantic : Focuses on the definition of the word
- Syntactic: The way the words are arranged.
- Pragmatic rules: How the words are used in social context
Sapir- Whorf hypothesis
A theory by Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf that tells us that our perception of reality is a result of our thought process.
Denotative Meaning
The dictionary meaning of a word.
Connotative Meaning
A individualized meaning of a word. (Usually the emotional aspect)
What Language errors should be avoided?
- Grammatical errors
- Slang
- Colloquialisms ( Informal words or language ex: Ya’ll, wanna,)
- Cliches
- Euphemism (the opposite of sugar coating)
- Profanity
- Racist language. gender biased etc.
How do you improve your language skills?
- Avoid intentional confusion
- Be descriptive and concrete
- Identify and appreciate differences and uniqueness
- Always define what you mean
Regionalisms
Words and phrases specific to a particular region or part of the country.
