19
Q

What are the factors affecting choice of delivery system?

A
♦Cost
♦Speed
♦Distance
♦Type of good
♦Convenience
20
Q

Explain how cost affects choice of delivery system

A
  • different forms of transport cost different amounts of money, so the cost of each method as well as the amount of money available to the firm must be taken into account.
  • e.g. a farmer in Cork sending eggs to Dublin using road transport even though air is quicker. This is because the cost of air would make the eggs too expensive
21
Q

Explain how the speed affect choice of delivery system

A
  • How quickly goods need to get to the destination is an important factor
  • e.g. vital human organs required for transplant operation would be transported by air, because speed is far more important factor than cost
22
Q

Explain how distance effects choice of delivery system

A

The distance the good will have to travel is important factor, especially if going to different country
-For example the sender of a large consignment of goods to the US would have to use air or sea

23
Q

Explain how convenience affects choice of delivery system

A

-Does the system run on fixed schedules? Or do we require a system that can operate at any time of day or night?

24
Q

Explain how the type of good affect the choice of delivery system

A

-For Example heavy machinery can only be transported by road and sea due to its size and weight

25
Q

What are containers?

A

Large metal boxes that can be transported by lorry, train or ship

26
Q

What are the advantages of containers?

A

~Not handled much - little risk of damage
~Little chance goods will be stolen
~Large amounts of goods can be transported in one go - saves money and is more effecient

27
Q

What is RO-RO?

A

A system of loading goods into containers and onto lorries at the premises and then driving onto a ship for transfer to another port. The lorry then drives off the ship at the final destination where the goods are unloaded

28
Q

What is LO-LO?

A

Where a crane located at the port or on the ship lifts metal containers from the back of a lorry onto the ship. When the ship arrives at the port, the containers are lifted off again onto lorries, and brought to their final destination
