Chapter 27 Flashcards
Evisceration
An intestine or other internal organ protruding through a wound in the abdomen
Flail chest
Fracture of two or more adjacent ribs in two or more places that allow free movement of fractured segment.
Paradoxical motion
Movement of ribs in a flail segment That is opposite to the direction of movement of the rest of the chest cavity.
Pneumothorax
Air in the chest cavity
Air can Enter the chest cavity through a puncture in the chest wall. Can cause a collapsed lung.
Sucking chest wound
A open chest wound in which air is sucked into the chest cavity
Tension pneumothorax
A type of pneumothorax in which air that enters the chest cavity is prevented from escaping
What are three common ways the chest can be in injured?
Blunt trauma, penetrating objects, compression.
Open chest wound
Means not only that the skin is broken but the chest wall is also penetrated, Usually by a bullet or knife blade.
Flutter valve dressings
Involve taping the dressing in place and leaving a side or a quarter of the dressing unsealed, As the patient inhales, The dressing will seal the wound, As a patient exhales the free corner of the dressing will release pressure.
Hemothorax and Hemopneumothorax
Hemothorax is a condition in which the chest cavity fills with blood. With hemopneumothorax the chest cavity feels with both blood and air.
Traumatic Asphyxia
TA is associated with Sudden compression of the chest. When this occurs, the sternum and ribs exert severe pressure on the heart and lungs, forcing blood out of the right atrium and up to the jugular veins in the neck. The patient’s neck and face will be darker color than the rest of the body.
Cardiac Tamponade
When an injury to the heart causes blood to flow into the surrounding pericardial sac. The sack fills with blood and compresses the chamber of the heart to a point where it can no longer adequately fill, backing up blood into the veins.
Aortic injury and dissection
Damage to the aorta from penetrating trauma or degeneration of the aorta from hypertension
Commotio cordis
When someone gets hit in the center of the chest. The result is usually a bruise or a fracture. This can cause the heart to enter ventricular fibrillation. Karate kid punched in the chest
