Chapter 26: Male Reproductive System Flashcards
What is the name of the reproductive organ responsible for producing gametes and sex hormones?
gonads
What are the specific gonads for males and females?
male: testis
female: ovary
What are the gametes that get produced in the testis and ovaries?
testis: sperm
ovary: oocyte
What is the name of the fluid part where the male sex cells are found?
semen
What is the difference between males and females when it comes to gamete production?
males: at puberty sperm cells get produced daily
females: oocytes are produced before birth (dormant till puberty; no new oocytes get produced as they get older)
How many chromosomes does a male/female carry when in fertilization to form a zygote?
sperm - 23
oocyte - 23
What pouch of skin is located outside the male body where within the testis can be found?
scrotum
What purpose does the epididymis serve?
stores sperms
What part of the male reproductive system gets to produce the majority of semen?
seminal gland
What is the function or the purpose of the bulbourethral gland?
- secretes a low amount of semen
- lubricates the urethra & the tip of the penis
What is important in order for a male to have a healthy sperm count?
the temperature
What are two important muscles found within the scrotal wall and what role do they play?
- dartos muscle: smooth, when it contracts it wrinkles the skin which reduces the surface area of the scrotum (testis gets warmed)
- cremaster muscle: pulls scrotal sac closer to the body in response to cold temperature to keep warm (brings close or further away from the body based on the temp.)
What makes up the spermatic cord in the deep layer and their function?
- testicular artery: brings O2 + rich blood to the testis
- ## pampiniform plexus: heat exchange occurs; helps cool down the warm blood
What makes the inguinal canal larger in males than in females?
due to the wide spermatic cord passing through
Where is sperm actually being produced & where is it stored?
the seminiferous tubule of the testis; the epididymis is where it gets stored
