Chapter 25: Face and Neck Injuries Flashcards
Discuss
Principle concern with face and neck injuries?
Airway compromise
Discuss
Tx: foreign object in eye
Flush laterally, remove with Qtip if under eyelid, never attempt to remove from cornea
Discuss
Tx: Impaled object in eye
Make gauze donut, place over eye and object, stabilize with bandage around head covering both eyes
Discuss
Tx: Chemical burn in eye
Irrigate for at least 5 min, 20 for alkali or acids since they penetrate deeper
Discuss
Tx: Thermal burns of eye
If eyelid burned, pt requires immediate care without further examination
Discuss
Tx; Laceration of globe
Never exert pressure on lacerated glove, cover exposed eye with moist dressing, apply soft dressings to both eyes
Discuss
Tx: blunt injury to eye
Bone fragments may limit eye muscle movement, causing diplopia
Discuss
When should contacts be removed in field?
Only for chemical burns.
Discuss
What are turbinates/
Three layers of bone in each nasal chamber
Discuss
What should you worry about with nose injury?
Skull fx
Discuss
Tx: Ear bleed/trauma
Place padded dressing behind ear on scalp and then place dressing over ear to avoid pain
Discuss
What to do with avulse teeth?
Put in saline or cold milk
Discuss
Tx: Impaled object in cheek
Consider removing to apply pressure from both sides if bleeding is obstructing airway
Discuss
Tx: Neck laceration/penetration
Occlusive dressing to prevent air embolism, apply pressure above and below to block carotid and jugular.
Discuss
Consequence of blunt injuries to neck?
Can cause severe airway problems. Possibly see subQ emphysema.
