Chapter 2.5 Flashcards
What is the chemical equation for photosynthesis?
6CO₂+6H₂O ===> C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂
Where in a plant does photosynthesis take place?
In the chloroplasts
What is the green pigment in chloroplasts called?
Chlorophyll
What does chlorophyll do?
Chlorophyll captures the Sun’s light energy and traps it in the chemical bonds of glucose.
What do stomata do?
Take in carbon dioxide. This is their way of “breathing”
What do thylakoids do?
Thylakoids are where the light reactions of photosynthesis take place.
What is essential for photosynthesis?
Sunlight
What are the two raw materials needed for photosynthesis?
Water and Carbon Dioxide
What happens in the light reaction of photosynthesis?
The light reaction requires sunlight and takes place in the grana (the stack of thylakoid disks) in the chloroplasts. The sunlight causes electrons to become excited, and the bonds within water molecules are broken, releasing oxygen and forming energy-rich molecules
What happens in the dark reaction of photosynthesis?
The dark reaction doesn’t require light and takes place in the stroma of chloroplasts. The energy rich molecules formed in the light reaction, together with carbon dioxide, are used to make carbohydrate molecules, such as glucose. This process is called the Calvin-Benson cycle, or carbon fixation.
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
carbon dioxide + water ===> glucose + oxygen
