Chapter 2.2 Flashcards
What are the three relationships within a species?
Collaboration, Mating, and Competition
What is Collaboration?
Collaboration is when organisms cooperate with each other to ensure their survival.
What is Mating?
Mating is when members of the same species produce offspring, thus ensuring the survival of the species.
What is Competition?
Competition occurs when organisms use the same limited resource.
What are the two relationships between different species?
Symbiosis and Non-Symbiosis
What are the 3 types of symbiosis?
Mutualism, Commensalism, Parasitism
What is mutualism?
Mutualism is a relationship between two organisms in which both organisms benefit.
What is commensalism?
Commensalism is a relationship between two organisms in which one organism benefits and the other organism is not affected.
What is parasitism?
Parasitism is a relationship in which one organism (the parasite) lives in or on the body of another (the host). The parasite benefits but the host is harmed.
What is the one type of non-symbiosis?
Predator - Prey
What is Predator - Prey?
In a Predator - Prey relationship, one organism (the predator) eats another (the prey). Therefore one benefits and the other doesn’t. It’s not symbiotic because the relationship isn’t long term.
What is an example of mutualism?
The anemone fish hides within the tentacles of the sea anemone where it is camouflaged from its predators. The sea anemone is cleaned of algae by the fish.
What is an example of commensalism?
Cattle flush insects out of the water and cattle egrets feast on the insects.
What is an example of parasitism?
Ticks attach to the skin of animals and slowly drink their blood. Bacteria from the tick can infect the animals.
What is an example of predator - prey?
The salmon is eaten by the shark, giving the shark energy.
