Chapter 6.3 Flashcards
What are the three types of plate boundaries?
Transfroming boundaries, Converging boundaries, Diverging boundaries
When do Transforming boundaries occur?
One plate slides past another along a single fault line.
*Plate material is not created or destroyed.
What is a fault?
A fracture in rock where movement has occured.
When do Converging boundaries occur?
When two plates move towards each other.
What are the three types of Converging boundaries?
Ocean to continent collision, Continent to continent collision, Ocean to ocean collision.
What occurs in Ocean to continent?
Oceanic crust collides with continetal crust, oceanic landform is pushed down into mantle as it is denser,
known as a subduction, resulting in a line of mountains along the
crumpled edge and also volcanoes forming due to heat rising through
the cracks in the crust. An ocean trench may result.
What occurs in Continent to continent collision?
Two continental plates collide; they
have similar densities, so no subduction but the edges of the two plates
crumple and fold into a high mountain range.
What occurs in Ocean to ocean collision?
Two oceanic crusts collide, the older denser crust will subduct below the newer one, creating a deep ocean trench. Subduction may create a line of undersea.
What occurs in Diverging boundaries
Plates move away from each other.
What features can be formed because of Diverging boundaries?
Spreading boundaries occur in the middle of the land or ocean.
Diverging boundaries may cause continental crust to seperate and a narrow sea/lake may form.
What are some examples of results of Diverging boundaries
E.g. Breaking up of the supercontinent Pangaea, Formation of the RIft Valley in East Africa, Red Sea.
