Chapter 24 Thoracic Wall Flashcards
What are the origins, insertions, actions, and innervations of the external intercostal muscles?
- Origins: Lower margin of the rib above
- Insertions: Upper margin of the rib below
- Actions: Elevation of the ribs during inspiration
-
Innervations: Intercostal nerves T1 to T6
Thoracoabdominal nerves T7 to T11
What are the origins, insertions, actions, and innervations of the internal intercostal muscles?
- Origins: Upper margin of the rib below; costal cartilage
- Insertion: Lower margin of the rib above; costal cartilage
- Actions: Depression of the ribs during expiration
-
Innervations: Intercostal nerves T1 to T6
Thoracoabdominal nerves T7 to T11
How do the fibers of the external and internal intercostal muscles course?
- External intercostal muscles: course MEDIALLY and INFERIORLY
- Internal intercostal muscles: course MEDIALLY and SUPERIORLY
Where can the external and internal intercostal muscles be found?
- External intercostal muscles: POSTERIOR to the tubercle of the rib & ANTERIOR to the costochondral junction
- Internal intercostal muscles: ANTERIOR to the sternum & POSTERIOR to the angle of the rib
What is the neurovascular plane?
The area between the internal intercostal muscles and the innermost intercostal muscles
What is contained in that neurovascular plane?
Intercostal vein, artery, nerve
What bone structure do the contents in the neurovascular plane sit within?
Costal groove on the LOWER surface of the rib
Where can the external intercostal membrane be found?
At the costochondral junction
What are the parts of the sternum?
- Manubrium
- Jugular notch
- Body
- Sternal angle
- Xiphoid process
- Epigastric fossa
- Xiphisternal joint
Where is each part of the sternum located?
- Manubrium: superior to the sternum
- Jugular notch: superior the manubrium
- Body: middle of the sternum
- Sternal angle: between the manubrium and the body of the sternum
- Xiphoid process: inferior portion of the sternum
- Epigastric fossa: anterior to the xiphoid process
- Xiphisternal joint: between the xiphoid process and the body
What are the parts of the rib?
- Head
- Neck
- Tubercle
- Body
- Angle
- Anterior end
- Costal groove
Where is each part of the rib located?
- Head: articulates with the bodies of the thoracic vertebrae
- Neck: lateral to the head
- Tubercle: lateral to the neck
- Body: shaft of rib
- Angle: where the curve is sharpest
- Anterior end: articulates with the costal cartilage
- Costal groove: inferior to the body
What are true ribs?
The first seven ribs (1-7)
What are false ribs?
The last five ribs (8-12)
What are floating ribs?
Costal cartilages that end with muscle with no anterior articulation (11 and 12)
