Chapter 27 Blood Vessels Flashcards
What is an artery?
Blood vessels that deliver oxygen-rich blood from the HEART to TISSUES of the body
What is an arteriole?
Small branch of an artery that leads to the capillaries
What is a capillary?
Connections between ARTERIOLES and VENULES
What is a venule?
Small veins formed by the junction of several capillaries
What is a vein?
A vessel formed by the junction of several venules
Which blood vessel contains valves?
Veins
What is the purpose of the valves that veins contain?
Allow blood flow toward the heart only
Which blood vessel has the thinnest walls?
Veins
What is a lumen?
The space within the blood vessels
What changes do we see in the vessel walls when comparing arteries and veins?
- Arteries: Thicker walls; composed of smooth muscle and elastic fibers
- Veins: Thinner walls; small amount of smooth muscle and elastic fibers
At what level does gas exchange take place?
At the capillary level
