Family
a basic unit of society consists of those individuals, male or female, youth or adult, legally or not legally related, genetically or not genetically related, who are considered by the others to represent their significant persons.
Extended Family
relatives of the nuclear family such as grandparents or aunts and uncles.
Family-Centered Nursing
nursing that considers the health of the family as a unit in addition to the health of individual family members.
Nuclear Family
a family structure of parents and their offspring.
3 Types of Clients
The individual, the family, and the community
Functions of the Family
Protect the PHYSICAL HEALTH of its members through adequate nutrition, and health care services. Provides an atmosphere that influence the COGNITIVE and the PSYCHOSOCIAL GROWTH. Provide MUTUAL SUPPORT systems and to preserve their heritage.
Traditional Family
an independent unit in which both parents reside in the house with their children
Two-Career Family (Dual-Career)
both partners are employed and may or may not have children
Single-Parent Family
Single parenthood. Stresses of single parenthood: child care concerns, financial concerns, role overload and fatigue in managing daily tasks, and social isolation.
Adolescent Family
Young parents who have kids as a teenager. Developmentally, physically, emotionally, and financially ill prepared.
Foster Family
accepts placement of children who can no longer live with their birth parents and are temporarily kept.
Blended Family (Step Families)
Existing family units who join together to form new families (i.e. Brady Bunch)
Intragenerational Family
More than 2 generations who live together
Cohabiting Family (Communal)
consist of unrelated individuals or families who live under one roof.
Gay and Lesbian Family
Homosexual couples who form families based on the same goals as a heterosexual family: caring and commitment
