Chapter 23 (Optional) - Intro to CNS Pharmacology Flashcards
Where do CNS drugs act?
brain and spinal cord
Medical applications for CNS drugs:
-pain relief
-seizure suppression
-anesthesia
-antipsychotics
Non-medical uses for CNS drugs:
-stimulant
-depressant
-euphoric
How many neurotransmitters does the CNS have (compared to the PNS 3)?
21+ (like vegas)
What impedes entry of drugs into the brain?
the blood brain barrier
What can pass the blood brain barrier?
lipid soluble agents and drugs that cross via transport systems
What drugs can’t cross the BBB?
-protein bound drugs
-highly ionized drugs
Why are infants more sensitive to CNS drugs?
BBB is not fully developed
Why is the response altered in chronic CNS drug use?
-brain adapts to changes which alter SE and TE
Why are antipsychotics and antidepressants taken for weeks before effects develop?
responses result from adaptive changes not direct drug effects
Tolerance
decreased response occurring in the course of prolonged drug use
Physical Dependence
a state in which abrupt discontinuation of drug use will precipitate a withdrawal syndrome
Withdrawal symptoms result from:
changes in adaptation
