Chapter 23 Flashcards
What happens when mature sperm and a secondary oocyte unite?
Fertilization (all about uniting)
How many weeks on average does a baby stay in utero?
38 weeks
Increase in size
Increase number in cells
Growth
Growth and aging, individual changes during life
Development
Fertilization-birth
Prenatal
Birth-death
Postnatal
Where does fertilization take place?
Fallopian (uterine) tube
What is the travel pattern of sperm once in the vagina?
Vagina>cervix>body of uterus>fallopian tube
How long can a oocyte survive after ovulation?
12-24 hours
How quick could a sperm reach the oocyte?
1 hour after intercourse
How many sperm does it take to fertilize a 2nd oocyte?
1 (only 1)
How long can sperm live in the women?
6 days
What must occur to the 2nd oocyte before fertilization?
It must be ovulated and in the fallopian tube
Describe the process one sperm and 2nd oocyte unite to make zygote
Sperm> corona radiata>dissolves Corona radiata with acrosomal enzyme>sperm digest zona pellucida> 1st sperm penetrates egg membrane> fertilizes egg> 1st sperm brakes through zona pellucida and becomes hard> pronuclei unite and make zygote
Cells surrounding egg(2nd oocyte)
Corona radiata
Glycoprotein layer that surrounds egg (2nd oocyte)
Zona pellucida
What makes up these stages (pre-embryonic, embryonic, fetal )
Prenatal period
Presence of a developing offspring in the uterus
Pregnancy
From fertilization to second week
*Includes cleavage, blastocyst formation, implantation, development of extraembryonic membranes
Pre-embryonic stage
What stage of prenatal is development?
Pre-embryonic
Cell division & distribution of zygotes cytoplasm into smaller cells.
Cleavage
Smaller cells made from cleavage
Blastomeres
Solid mass (16 cells) moves into uterus
Morula
Blastocyst
Hallow bell of cells that attach to the endometrium
