-Economy- Liberals believed government should regulate the economy to protect people from the power of corporations and wealthy elites.
-Social Programs- Liberals believed that government should help the disadvantaged by putting more of society’s tax burden on wealthier people.

-Economy- Conservatives feared that the government will restrict economic freedom limiting the ability of a person to improve their standard of living.
-Social Programs- Conservatives believe that issues are addressed through religion and through private churches, individuals, and communities to help those in need.

-He became a Hollywood actor in the late 1930’s.
-In the late 40’s, he became president of the Screen Actor’s Guide (the actor’s union).
-In 1966, he became governor of California.
-He eventually defeated Jimmy Carter in the 1980 election to become president.
(4 points) Describe the three examples of the Reagan Doctrine.
-Afghanistan- Russia invaded and Reagan sent millions of dollars in aid to Afghan guerillas getting Soviets to eventually withdraw.
-Nicaragua- Reagan secretly sent arms to rebel group the Contras to defeat Communist group the Sandanistas.
-Grenada- Reagan sent troops to defeat Grenadian and Cuban soldiers and set up an anti-Communist government.

-Congress banned Reagan from continuing to secretly support the -Contras, but he continued anyway.
-At the same time, US secretly sold weapons to Iran in exchange for the release of certain hostages.
-The money they received then went to the Contras.
-People eventually found out, but Reagan avoided getting into trouble.
