Britain had a huge empire at this point, it was very expensive to have over 10,000 troops and it was extremely expensive. What happened after this?
Britain tried to make the Colonists to pay up and every time they would try a different tax method there would be some kind of rebellion.The niggas were pissed.
What did the radical whigs fear?
Feared threat to liberty by powers of monarch and his ministers; they were warned to be eternally vigilant against corruption and conspiracies to take away their “hard-won” liberties.
What did Mercantilists believe?
That wealth was power and that a country’s economic wealth would be measured by the amount of gold or silver in it’s treasury; they needed to export more than they imported.
What is the Navigation Law of 1650?
All commerce flowing to and from the colonies must be transported in only in British (including colonial) Vessels.
Why did European goods destined for America have to land in Britain first?
So taxes could be collected and British middlemen would take a slice of profits. American merchants also has to ship certain products (tobacco mostly) exclusively to Britain… even if prices were better elsewhere
How did John Hancock amass a fortune?
Wholesale smuggling.
What did Americans reap from the mercantilism?
Direct benefits such as:
•London paid better prices to producers of ships parts over Britain competitors.
•Virginia Tabasco planters had a monopoly in the British market.
•Colonists protects by worlds mightiest Navy and strong British army without cost.
How did the seven years war affect the British?
Put them in a horrible debt and about a half of which was because of the defense provided by Britain.
Sugar Act of 1764:
Increased taxes on foreign sugar imported from West Indies… after colonists bitched they substantially lowered the taxes.
Quartering Act of 1765:
Certain colonies had to provide food and quarters for British troops; was suspended in 1767 for failure to comply because Americans were assholes.
Stamp Act of 1765:
mandated use of stamped paper or stamps that made sure taxes were paid. (Britain’s paid Twice as much.)
What did Americans believe of The Stamp Act, the Quartering Act, and the Sugar Act?
They thought that this was not to protect them but to oppress them. They basically didn’t want to pay to have the protection of the troops.
Why was Britain forced to repeal the stamp act?
9 colonies petitioned (complained) the King/Parliament to repeal the act.
What did the patriots do to further force Parliament to drop the Stamp Act?
Patriots Ransacked the houses of unpopular officials the day the act was supposed to go into effect. All stamp agents were obviously forced to resign.
What is the Declaratory Act?
The right “to bind” “the colonies” “in all cases what so ever. This concluded that Parliament had ABSOLUTE and UNQUALIFIED sovereignty over its colonies.
