Q
How does a voltaic cell work?
A
A voltaic cell consists of 2 half-cells, in which either oxidation or reduction occurs. The 2 half cells consists of a piece of metal dipped in a solution of it’s ions. They’re connected by a salt bridge which allows ions to pass from each cell. A wire carries the e-‘s from the anode to the cathode.
Anode = OX occurs (-)
Cathode = RED occurs (+)
1
Q
What’s an electrochemical cell?
A
Any device that concerts chemical energy into electrical energy or the opposite. Redox reactions occur in all electrochemical cells.
2
Q
What metal is more easily oxidized, lead (Pb) or calcium (Ca)? (Refer to Table 21.1)
A
Calcium. B/c it’s more active.
