Chapter 17 - Thermochemistry Flashcards
What happens to the energy of the universe during a physical or chemical process?
It remains unchanged.
What are the ways that energy conversion can occur?
As either heat transfer or work, or combination of both
List two factors the heat capacity of an object depend on(?)
It’s mass and chemical composition.
On a cold night, you use an electric blanket to warm your body. Describe the direction of heat flow. Is this process endothermic or exothermic?
The heat flows out of the blanked into your body. The process in endothermic.
How are enthalpy (heat flow) changes expressed in chemical equations?
It can be either written as a reactant or a product.
Define calorimetry.
It’s the measurement of heat flow into or out of a system.
Define calorimeter.
A device used to measure calorimetry.
Define thermochemistry.
It’s the study of energy changes that occur in chemical reactions and changes in state.
What is chemical potential energy?
The energy stored in the chemical bonds of a substance.
How do endothermic processes differ from exothermic processes?
Endo processes is where heat is absorbed from the surrounding while an Exo process releases heat to it’s surroundings.
What is the law of conservation of energy?
Energy is neither created not destroyed.
