Dramatic emphasis
can be created by cutting into the scene with close-ups at just the right moments, a moment of discovery
Dissolves
often used to imply a temporal shift, or a change in location, or a character base psychological motivation for the transition, like moving into a memory, dream, or fantasy
Fade-outs
slow disappearing of an image into a color
Fade ins
the slow appearing of the image from a color
Fade-out/fade-in technique
frequently used as a time ellipse or to punctuate a major shift in the dramatic direction of the movie
Real time
2 hours in 2 hours
Reel time
2 hours in 2 days, weeks, months, years, etc.
Overlap editing
the obvious repetition of the same moment, action, or gesture several times-sometimes from different camera angles
Timing
the specific placement of a shot withi the sequence, meaning the precise moment one cuts to a new shot for maximum impact
Rhythm
the duration of the shots relative to each other, and the patterns of emphasis, or pulses thses durations create
Pace (tempo)
related to rhythm. Determined by the duration of shots next to other shots, but pace refers specifically to the rate of speed that a scene or sequence of scenes plays out
Fast-paced
suggests intensity, excitement, energy, or even confusion/chaos
Slow-paced
suggests casualness, fluidity, calm, contemplation, or even torpor/stasis
Associative edits
cuts that are designed to build additional meaning by juxtaposing two shots together with a stylized technique that encourages the audience to think about the connection
Formal/graphic elements
color, shape, movement
