Art departments jobs
- Prep the location
- Dresses the set
- Prepares wardrobe and props in advance of the rest of the crew
Loading in
getting all of the necessary equipment onto the location
Staging area
designated area, near the actual set, where all of it will be held
Tech rehearsal
basic run through of the scene to be shot, including dialogue and blocking, so that departments get a more accurate sense for where to set up the camera, lights, and sound
Focus marks
small pieces of tape that follow the path of a character’s movement in the space
Into character
get the actors into the emotional and psychological space necessary to pull off the scene and to remind the actors of the performance decisions that were made during preproduction rehearsals and read-throughs
Stand in
if an actor is not available, a stand in is used, ideally they have approximately the same height and coloring
Run-through
everyone proceeds as if you’re actually filming, without actually rolling camera or sound
Calling the shot
a standardized routine for every sync sound take on a double-system film production
Script supervisor
a person whose job it is to pay attention to continuity details and to mark off shots that have been completed
Video assist
a small video pickup device, attached to the camera viewing system, which records low-quality video of each take
MOS
shooting without sound
Tail slate
used to mark the take when you don’t want to break the emotional performance of the actor
