Chapter 21 2.0 Flashcards
What are the 2 branches of the immune system?
Innate and adaptive
What are the 2 parts of the first line of defense?
External - Skin and Mucous membranes
Internal - neutrophils and macrophages
What cells and processes are involved in the second line of defense (5)?
Phagocytes, NK cells, inflammation, antimicrobial proteins, fever
What 2 cells are phagocytes and what do they do?
Neutrophils (die after fighting)
Macrophages (free or fixed, develop from monocytes)
What are NK cells
Non phagocytic large lymphocytes that police blood and lymph
What cells are involved in the process of inflammation?
Macrophages, neutrophils and lymphocytes
What are the 4 signs of inflammation?
Redness, heat, pain, swelling
What are 3 characteristics of adaptive immunity?
Specific, systemic, and memory
What are 2 branches of adaptive immunity?
Humoral and cellular
What cells are involved in humoral immunity?
B cells
What cells are involved in cellular immunity?
T cells
