Describe Carmenere
Black grape widely grown in Chile Native to Bordeaux but rarely found there now. Sunny/warm location med-high acid, high tannin, full body often oaked to soften tannin
Where is Carmenere grown in Chile?
Central Valley
Describe Carmenere at levels of ripeness
If under ripe: strong g.bell pep and tomato leaf
Ripe: fresh blackfruit and herbal (eucalyptus).
Is Carmenere blended?
Made as single var sometimes but often blended w/ Cab Sauv or Merlot
Describe Malbec
deep color, full body
high tannin, black fruit
oaked
blended w/ cab sauv or merlot often.
Where is Malbec grown? Where most notably?
Argentina - most important black grape there.
Native to SW france but adapted to S.America
Most notably in Mendoza - high altitude
Describe Pinotage
Specifically developed for warm/dry S.Africa.
Related to pinot noir and is similar in red fruit flavors.
med-tannin, high-acid
Is Pinotage blended?
Can be single var. but also blended with Cab Sauv or Merlot, known as a Cape Blend
