Chapter 2 Water and pH Flashcards
Draw two water molecules and hydrogen bonding between the water molecules.
Describe the four properties of water and their importance in living organisms.
- Water is a polar solvent
- Water has cohesion
- Water has high heat capacity
- Water has a high heat of vaporization
Solution
two substances that are mixed together
Solute (socute)
a substance to be dissolved
Solvent
the one doing the dissolving
Why is water important in cohesion?
allows blood to move more easily in the blood vessels
Water has high heat capacity, why is that important?
It takes a long time to break off molecules
Water has a high heat of vaporization, why is that important?
changes liquid to gas hence sweat is mainly water, when we sweat the body uses heat to vaporize the water - cooling us off.
Common Acids
- Lemon Juice
- Vinegar
Common Basis
Ammonia
Household cleaners
Bleach
Define Acids
Donates hydrogen ions
Define Bases
Accepts ions will release (OH hydroxyl ions)
On the pH scale, 0 - 6 is
Acidic
On the pH scale, 7 is
Neutral
On the pH scale, 8 - 14 is
Basic
