Describe three core characteristics of an effective counsellor.
Genuineness, empathy, and warmth.
How does a counselling sessions differ from an assessment interview?
An assessment is lead by the counsellor asking the questions, and a counselling session is lead by the clients thoughts and emotions.
How does in positive regard demonstrated by a counsellor help establish a therapeutic alliance and build trust?
It implies that the clients problems are most important, this sessions is most important and the client himself is a highly respected person on earth. This makes the client feel safe and able to trust the counsellor knowing there is no judgement towards him.
Define Saviour Syndrome.
Trying to fix the clients problems yourself rather than letting them heal themselves.
Define counter-transference.
When a counsellor becomes bored or resentful or annoyed or frustrated with a client that turns them off.
Explain the concept of defender mechanisms.
They are defended that the client has developed to survive, to protect himself from painful feelings.
They are the keys to understanding dysfunctional patterns.
Define denial
Not admitting to the truth, making up things that aren’t true to avoid the pain of the truth.
Define rationalization.
Making up and excuse or reason why they shouldn’t feel the pain of the emotions.
Define intellectualization.
Telling or reporting a story with no emotion.
Define projection.
The client talks about someone having the feeling rather than himself.
Define over-talking.
A client keeps talking from thing to another to prevent themselves from talking about their own feelings.
