Chapter 1, Clinical Assessment Flashcards
If your client expressed resistance to answering any of the questions on the assessment, what would you do?
Reword the question
Be patient
Acknowledge their feelings
What are the three objectives for doing a clinical assessment?
- To understand the story behind the clients presenting problems.
- To build a therapeutic alliance.
- To identify goals for counselling.
If your client appeared to be in a state of crisis during the clinical assessment, what would you do?
Set the assessment aside.
Support the emotions.
When the feelings have subsided, take time to sort out what has happened.
Then look at choices and directions in order to provide some hope.
Why does the clinical assessment for counselling include questions regarding physical and medical information?
Certain types of health conditions contribute biologically to depression.
Epilepsy and M.S. may also affect mood, anxiety and personality.
Explain the procedure you would follow if your client expressed suicidal thoughts with the intention to act.
I would attempt to get the client to go to the hospital ER room to be examined by a physician preferably with family or friends. If the client is not willing to go to the hospital then I must take the next step and contact the police to help escort him. Once they are on their way I would get a suicide contract either written or verbal between the client and I.
What is the purpose of the mental status section of the assessment?
To assess the behaviour, appearance and the way the client talks.
What is the purpose of asking cognitive questions?
To assess the clients thinking process. Is there a psychotic disorder?
What is the purpose of the mood rating questions?
To figure out if a person is depressed, suicidal or homicidal.
