Explain the difference between the deserving and undeserving poor.
Deserving poor
People seen as being good moral character and only temporarily out of luck through no fault of their own
Undeserving poor
They were those individuals who seemed to be lazy or morally degenerate.
Once an applicant was judge to be deserving he or she had to appear before a committee of trustees who made the final decisions to grant aid
What is the settlement house movement?
the pupose was to bring the youth of the educated middle class and the charitable gentry to live among urban residents - a kind of mission to the poor.
What COS stands for, and what was its purpose?
The charity organization society (COS)was there to create order in the chaos created by the activities of 640charitables institutions.
The word under the auspices of the COS was possibly the most widespread attempt to help the poor.
What is Scientific philanthropy?
member of the protestant social and economic elite in an effort to reduce urban poverty and begging.
A person in need was now seen as having an objective problem and the role of the relief worker was to help him or her deal with the problem.
What was the objective of the Emergence of the social minimum?
Political community should seek to ensure that its members can all enjoy at least a minimally decent standard of living.
Define Casework.
social work that is directly concerned with the problems needs, and adjustments of individual cases, especially those involving a study of a person’s family history and personal circumstances.
A social worker out in the field helping and interacting with the families and children is an example of casework
work on the ground
What was the Gospel movement?
later in the 19th century (campaign oriented by churches - protestant). The social gospel wings of these churches started many of the settlement houses in Canada offering services such as daycare, education, and health care to needy people in poor neighborhoods.
What is the Great Depression?
This was an extremely difficult time of mass unemployment widespread hardship and seriously reduced living standards. This period was remarkable in the number of social workers

Define the difference between the Diagnostic approach and the Functional approach.
Diagnostic approach
emphasize an understanding of an individual’s problem by reference to causal events in his or her early life.
Functional approach
based on the belief in the potential of individuals to determine their own future direction in life.

What are Welfare cutbacks?
Meant that ordinary working Canadian might not be able to depend on the traditional social protection offered by such program as employment insurance and old age security
During this period of cutbacks and restrain, welfare programs became less universal and more targeted.
The anti-oppressive practice became more prevalent in schools of social work.
Define Globalization.
This meant that national and local governments had less and less freedom to act on behalf of their citizens especially on the big economic and social question of the day.
