Chapter 2- the cell Flashcards
what are prokaryotes
cells that have no nucleus and contain DNA suspended in interior with no membrane bound organelles
what are eukaryotes
cells that have DNA contained in a nucleus and typically has membrane systems
what is cell theory
- all orgs are composed on one or more cells
- the cell is the basic structural and functional unit of life
- cells arise from the division of pre existing cells
what are the three domains
bacteria, eukaryotic and archaen
what does RNA do
codes for cell functions
what is magnification
in microscopy, the ratio of object to its real life size
what is resolution
in microscopy, how clear the org is
what are two types of microscopes
light microscopes and e- microscopes
why are cells so small?
- more chemical activity an occur in a smaller cell
- more substances can be changed with much more efficiency in a small cell
- cells can specialize
what happens to the volume and surface area of a cell when its diameter is doubled?
its surface area increases by 4 and its SA increases by 8
what is the plasma membrane
a phospholipid biklayerthat regulates movement in and out of the cell
what are the components of a phospholipid mlcl?
a polar hydrophobic head and a non polar hydrophilic tail
what are integral proteins
proteins that pass through the membrane and function in structure and transport of specific mlcls
what are transport proteins
protein channels along the plasma membrane that only allow specific mlcls and ions to pass through
