Because the land and sea belonged to the gods. The ʻāina also gave them many resoures such as water, food, etc!
What is an Ahupuaʻa?
A land division that extends from the mountains to the sea several miles offshore. Hawaiians found or grew almost everything they needed.
Why was having different Ahupuaʻa important?
Because different Ahupua’as produced different things. For example, if the ahupua’a was on the valley or a place were it rained alot, they would ten to kalo patches, uala, mai’a, kō, and ʻulu. If the ahupuaʻa was by the shore they would harvest coconuts or catch fish. This allowed the people to barter for different things they needed, because there was an ahupuaʻa for all their needs.

The people would barter or share foods and goods

The aliʻi influenced the economy, made sure enough food was produced for everyone and conducted ceremonies that ensured the help of the gods.

Itʻs a festive honoring the god Lono and a change from harvest to agricultural season. Happens between October and March
