The Battle of Nuʻuanu was a battle that took place on Oʻahu. Kamehameha and his warriors fought the Chief of Oʻahu, Kalanikūpule. Kamehameha defeated the chief and his men.
Who was Kūkaʻilimoku and how does he relate to this chapter?
Kūkaʻilimoku was a war god. When Kamehamehaʻs uncle died, Kamehameha was charged with caring for the sacred god. This responsibility set him firmly on path to becoming a ruling chief. Later, when Kamehameha won the battle of Nuʻuanu, he killed and sacrificed Kalanikūpule (the Oʻahu chief) to Kūkaʻilimoku.
