Chapter 2- Skeletal System Flashcards
Functions of the skeletal system
•Gives support and shape to the body •Protects vital organs such as brain, spinal cord and heart •Assists in movement by providing a rigid structure for muscle attachment •manufactures blood cells (ilium, vertebrae, sternum, ribs)
Types of skeletons
Axial and appendiculal
Longitudinal bone growth
Epiphysis
Growing bone, pressure epiphysis, traction epiphysis
Epiphyseal plate
Long bones in the upper extremities
Clavicle, humerus, radius, ulna, metacarpals, phalanges
Long bones in the lower extremities
Femur, fibula, tibia, metacarpals and phalanges
Short bones in the upper extremities
Carpals
Short bones in the lower extremities
Tarsals
Flat bones in the upper extremities
Scapula
Flat bones in the axial skeleton
Cranial bones, ribs, sternum
Irregular bones in the lower extremities
Innominate bone (ilium, ischium, pubic)
