Q

Granite

A

Formed when molten magma forced itself into the crust millions of years ago. Cooled slowly with large crystals.
Black or pink.
Used in the building industry or for monuments.
Found in mourne and Wicklow mountains.

Q

Basalt

A

Formed when lava spread out across the earths surface. Cooled very quickly and solidified because it was exposed to air.
Tiny crystals and varies in colour from dark grey to black.
Found in the giants causeway

Q

Limestone

A

Formed on the beds of shallow, warm seas from the skeletons of tiny sea creatures, fish and shells. These picked up over millions of years. The particles were compressed and cemented together.
White to grey.
It is permeable and is laid down in strata.
Found in the burden
Used to improve soil fertility.

Q

Sandstone

A
Formed when large amounts of sand were worn away from the surface of the earth and transported by wind and rivers, and deposited on beds of lakes, seas and rivers.
Layers were compressed and cemented.
Brown to red.
Sometimes used as building material.
Mountains of Munster made of sandstone.

A

Molten magma forces it’s way into the body of a limestone
Pure marble: White in colour
When other minerals are present: red, green or black.

Q

Quartzite

A

Sandstone was changed into a metamorphic rock as it came into contact with magma during periods of folding.
Consists of grains of quartz packed tightly together.
Grey to white.
Cap on some of Ireland’s mountains.(croagh Patrick and the great sugarloaf)

17
Q

Name the earths natural resources

A

Metal ores, iron ore, copper, lead and zinc
Precious metals and stones: gold silver and diamonds
Building material: stone sand and gravel
