Permeable
Allowing water to pas through
Fossils
The remains of sea creatures inside rocks
Igneous
Granite and basalt
Describe how metamorphic rocks are formed
They are rocks that have been changed in some shape or form by great heat and pressure.
Describe how sedimentary rocks are formed
They were formed from the sediments/remains of other rocks.
How are igneous rocks formed?
They are formed as a result of volcanic activity.
Granite
Formed when molten magma forced itself into the crust millions of years ago. Cooled slowly with large crystals.
Black or pink.
Used in the building industry or for monuments.
Found in mourne and Wicklow mountains.
Basalt
Formed when lava spread out across the earths surface. Cooled very quickly and solidified because it was exposed to air.
Tiny crystals and varies in colour from dark grey to black.
Found in the giants causeway
Limestone
Formed on the beds of shallow, warm seas from the skeletons of tiny sea creatures, fish and shells. These picked up over millions of years. The particles were compressed and cemented together.
White to grey.
It is permeable and is laid down in strata.
Found in the burden
Used to improve soil fertility.
Sandstone
Formed when large amounts of sand were worn away from the surface of the earth and transported by wind and rivers, and deposited on beds of lakes, seas and rivers. Layers were compressed and cemented. Brown to red. Sometimes used as building material. Mountains of Munster made of sandstone.
Marble
Molten magma forces it’s way into the body of a limestone
Pure marble: White in colour
When other minerals are present: red, green or black.
Fireplaces, gravestones and ornaments.
Rathlin island and Connemara.
