Chapter 2: Organizing and Summarizing Data Flashcards
frequency distribution
table that lists each category of data and number of occurrences for each category of data
relative frequency
proportion/percent of occurrences in a category to the whole sample; find by RF= frequency/sample size
histogram
frequency distributon for quantitative data invilving ranges of rectangles showing frequencies or relative frequencies for each range
stem-and-leaf plot
quantitative frequency distribution showing each number via the leaf (right-most digit) and stem (rest of number)
dot plot
quantitative frequency distribution showing every data point as dots stacked upon each other for a particular range of values
cumulative fequency
addition of values that come before the range and the range itself
In what ways can graphs be misleading?
- inconsistent vertical and horizontal axes
- 3D misrepresentations
- unclear pictures
- etc
pareto chart
chart showing bars sorted in order from largest to smallest
time-series plot
line graph that shows a measurement changing over time
cumulative relative frequency
relative frequency of a specific category plus total relative frequencies of previous categories
symmetric distribution
bellshaped , same about the midline
uniform distribution
approximately same value whole time
skewed right
lowev values on right, tail is on the right
skewed left
lower values are on the left, tail is to the left
